Among those released are 250 prisoners serving life sentences for attacks on Israelis, but more than half of the released detainees are being deported to Egypt rather than returning home.

The prisoner exchange is viewed as the first step in a ceasefire aimed at ending the two-year war. Gaza continues to face severe humanitarian challenges, with widespread devastation and shortages of basic necessities. According to Gaza health officials, the conflict has resulted in over 67,000 deaths and 170,000 injuries, and the United Nations estimates that 600 aid trucks per day are needed to address the crisis, though aid distribution is delayed by inspection requirements.
