Marine Le Pen, leader of France's far-right, is appealing a court ruling that found her guilty of misusing European Parliament funds to pay for party staff. The outcome of this appeal will determine whether she can participate in the 2027 French presidential elections. 

The initial ruling sentenced Le Pen to four years in prison, including two years of house arrest, a five-year ban from running for office, and loss of voting rights. Eleven other defendants are also on trial, with the appeal proceedings expected to last until February 12 and a verdict anticipated before the summer.

The outcome of Marine Le Pen's appeal trial will determine if the far-right leader will be able to run in the 2027 presidential elections. The 57-year-old French MP is back in court to appeal a March ruling that found her guilty of misusing European Parliament funds to pay for parliamentary assistance, working for her party called National Front at the time. She says she's innocent. I hope to be heard by the appeal court. I'm in a state of hope for the outcome. In the first ruling, Le Pen was sentenced to four years in prison, including two years of house arrest with an electronic bracelet and a five-year ban on running for office. She also lost her right to vote. Eleven other defendants will also be tried. The appeal trial will last until the 12th of February, but the verdict is not expected until before the summer.
