Newly-elected Members of Parliament (MPs) from France’s New Popular Front left-wing alliance have taken their seats in the parliament after winning a significant number of seats in the recent election. Historically, the French president appoints a prime minister from the winning party.

Marine Tendelier, the head of the Greens, is among the leading candidates for the prime minister's position from the Popular Front Left-Wing Alliance. Tendelier's political career includes combatting far-right politics as a councillor in her hometown of Aisne-en-Beaumont. She is known for her consensus-driven approach to governance.

Olivier Faure, the leader of the Socialist Party, is also a contender for the prime ministerial post. Faure's low-key demeanor is seen as potentially beneficial in navigating France's volatile political landscape. He has expressed his readiness for the role, emphasizing the importance of continuous dialogue with coalition partners.

François Ruffin, an outspoken MP known for his advocacy for workers' rights, is another notable candidate. Recently re-elected, Ruffin left Jean-Luc Mélenchon's hard-left party shortly before the second round of voting. Ruffin has criticized Mélenchon for being a divisive figure among working-class voters.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s hard-left party remains a dominant force within the left-wing alliance, posing challenges for forming a coalition with President Macron's centrist party. Even without Mélenchon, establishing a centre-left coalition could be difficult due to longstanding disagreements between the two sides.

Regardless of whom President Macron selects as the prime minister, the new government will need to focus on compromise to function effectively and avoid instability.



France's leftist alliance candidates contend for the top job

Marine Tendelier could be France's next Prime Minister. The head of the Greens is likely to be one of the popular Front Left-Wing Alliance's candidates for the job. Tendelier honed her political skills and straight-talking style, battling the far-right as a councillor in her hometown of Aisne-en-Beaumont, Marine Le Pen's constituency. I believe that the best method is consensus, arriving at intelligent solutions by working intelligently together. While Tendelier is widely regarded as charismatic, Olivier Faure is not. But the socialist leader's low-key approach could be an advantage, bringing calm in the political storm. Arriving at Parliament, Faure looked relaxed. I'm ready to take the job, but with the caveat it'll be done in constant dialogue with our partners. And then there's François Ruffin, a well-known personality in France. Ruffin's an outspoken MP who's made defending workers' rights his cause. He was re-elected for a third time after controversially quitting the hard-left party of Jean-Luc Mélenchon just days before the second round. All you see and hear is Mélenchon, Mélenchon, Mélenchon as an obstacle for voters. And in working-class places like this, in the regions, it's a turn-off. Well, we've just seen Mélenchon arriving. His hard-left party dominates the left-wing alliance, and that's a problem for President Macron's centrists. They might be prepared to work with the left in a coalition, but not if it includes Mélenchon and his MPs. Even without Mélenchon, a centre-left coalition wouldn't be easy. The two sides have rarely agreed. Traditionally, the president must pick a prime minister from the biggest party, in this case the left. But Macron may surprise voters once again. What's certain is whoever gets the job, she or he will have to run a government that can compromise, or one that will be unable to govern and unlikely to survive. Natasha Butler, Al Jazeera, Paris.
