January is typically the snowiest month for several U.S. states, with the most snowfall occurring in regions highlighted in pink on weather maps. Early January tends to be coldest in certain central areas, while the coldest period for the northeast usually arrives later in the month.

Weather conditions in January can change rapidly, with snowstorms one week and severe weather threats such as tornadoes the next. Western cities often experience some of their wettest conditions due to atmospheric rivers, which, when present, significantly increase the risk of heavy rain and flooding, especially when rain falls on existing snow.

Got snow on the brain? Well, there are several states where January is typically the snowiest month, and the snowiest spots are the ones shaded in the light pink and the bright pink. Now on this map, the part that's circled, is where it's typically coldest in early January, but across the northeast, late January is usually the coldest part of the month. Now the thing about January is that the weather headline might be snow one week, and then the next week there could be severe weather threats like tornadoes that are very much a possibility. And January is among one of the wettest months of the year for several western cities from atmospheric rivers. Now atmospheric rivers don't accompany every west coast storm, but when they do, they're two and a half times more likely to produce heavy rain falling on existing snow, which can trigger serious flooding.
