A doctor, politician and a mother, there wasn't much that Dr Katie Allen couldn't do, but earlier this year she revealed she had a rare form of cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, and last night she lost her battle. She made her diagnosis public days after contesting the seat of Chisholm in May's federal election. She was passionate about making a difference, not just for that local community, but for our nation. And as the Liberal member for Higgins in 2019, her main focus was to improve mental health services, and after developing a peanut allergy herself, she pushed for improvements on food labelling. But Katie made her mark when she crossed the floor on amendments to the Religious Discrimination Bill in 2022. You look happy. I do. Yeah. Good. Yeah. I feel like I've stood up for what I believe in. She voted in support of stronger protections to transgender students and staff. What I feel really thrilled about is the whole process. You know, our democracy does work. The news of Katie's passing was shared by her family. She passed in peace, surrounded by family, and lived a full, beautiful life all the way to the end. Tributes were quick to follow. Katie Allen is someone who I had enormous respect for. She has passed far too soon. Katie was a trailblazer in every sense. She did things differently, and she did them her way. Our state and our nation is better for Katie's contribution and service. She was principled and strong, always determined to make a difference, and she did. Having the conversation is important to bring Australians together. Katie Allen was 59 years old.
