AFL coaching greats Damien Hardwick and Alastair Clarkson are backing a new push to protect workers taking medicinal cannabis from losing their jobs. They've been lobbying the Victorian state government to overhaul workplace laws.

AFL coaches Damien Hardwick and Alistair Clarkson have publicly supported greater workplace protections for employees who use medicinal cannabis. Both coaches, representing North Melbourne and Gold Coast Suns, are among the estimated two million Australians using medicinal cannabis to manage chronic pain. 

A proposal introduced to Parliament by the Legalise Cannabis Party seeks to protect workers from disciplinary action if they test positive for medicinal cannabis, as long as they are not impaired on the job. The motion, which will be debated in the Upper House, could affect a range of industries including mining, transport, aviation, and police. There is currently no clear timeline for the implementation of any recommendations, with the government's response to a previous parliamentary inquiry still pending.

Some people with THC in their systems and workers have lost their employment or stood down as a result of medicinal cannabis being in their system. The North Melbourne and Gold Coast Suns coaches are among the two million Aussies using it to treat chronic pain. Victoria led the way in being able to provide people who experience significant and chronic pain with access to medicinal cannabis. But their employers can still take away their livelihoods. While no one should be impaired at work, no one should be sacked at work for simply taking a prescription medication. Under the proposal which has been introduced to Parliament by the Legalise Cannabis Party, users would be protected if they tested positive for the drug while at work, affecting employees in industries including mining, transport, aviation and police. Where the worker is unimpaired, they should be treated appropriately, professionally and with dignity. The motion will be debated in the Upper House this Wednesday, though there's no clear timeline on when any recommendations may be implemented, with the Government's response to last year's parliamentary inquiry already six months overdue.
