The final decision rests with state lawmakers, as the current announcement is a recommendation.

The state of Florida plans to end all vaccine mandates for children. That's the message from Governor Ron DeSantis and the state's Surgeon General today. They say Florida will phase out all of the long-standing vaccine mandates put in place to protect children against diseases like polio and measles. Florida would be the first in the nation to do so. The announcement is already drawing criticism from other health leaders who stress that vaccines are safe and effective. CBS News Miami has the very latest. The Florida Department of Health, in partnership with the governor, is going to be working to end all vaccine mandates in Florida. Dr. Joseph Latipo, Florida Surgeon General, making this announcement today. I think a parent should have their own rights. Jamila Garcia, a mother of four, agrees with the state's plan to end all vaccine mandates in the state of Florida. For years, the state of Florida required a number of vaccines for children like measles, hepatitis B, chickenpox, and rubella. Because they need their vaccine in order to get an education, and I think that's wrong. But now the governor and the state's Surgeon General, Dr. Joseph Latipo, are working to put an end to that, making it the first state in the nation to do so. Dr. Latipo is a longtime critic of vaccines. He said the current requirements is an intrusion on people's lives. Every last one of them, every last one of them is wrong and drips with disdain and slavery. Who am I as a government, or anyone else, or who am I as a man standing here now to tell you what you should put in your body? We spoke with infectious disease doctor Eileen Marty, who says this decision could have serious ramifications. For those families that recognize the scientific validity and safety of vaccines, will have much fewer opportunities and ability to easily vaccinate their children. The Surgeon General saying it should be the people's choice. Who am I to tell you what your child should put in your body? And unlike the mother we spoke with, not everyone agrees, saying this will not only affect the children, but a community as a whole. These schools are not in a bubble. They're part of our community. And so we know that schools are a great setting for these diseases to spread if there are low vaccination rates. And then that goes out into the community as well. And the United Teachers of Dade responding to this announcement in a statement saying in part that school vaccination requirements have always played a critical role in keeping kids and schools safe. Now, they will be working closely with parents, as well as health officials to make sure that any changes will not undermine the well-being of the children. Now, ending vaccine mandates entirely is up to state lawmakers. Now, this is only a recommendation, but ultimately state lawmakers will have the final word.
