Five experienced South African police officers are working alongside French investigators to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry into the circumstances of his death. 

Mtetwa had been reported missing by his wife prior to the discovery. While initial investigations suggest the death may have been deliberate, authorities are also considering concerns about possible foul play. Mtetwa's career included controversial periods, notably his role as police minister during the 2012 Marikana massacre, and he was recently implicated in testimony regarding political interference in policing.

Mtetwa served in various capacities during his lifetime, but his career was not without controversy and he was entangled in probes by several commissions. As police minister, he presided over one of the country's darkest democratic moments, the 2012 Marikana massacre, when 34 striking minors were gunned down by the police. Just two weeks before his passing, Mtetwa was implicated in explosive testimony before the commission, probing political interference in policing.
