The UK's new Home Affairs Minister, Shabana Mahmood, announced a policy to reduce the number of visas for countries that refuse to accept deported nationals. While each nation faces unique circumstances, all are experiencing increased border pressures and public concern. The ministers emphasized the importance of collaboration as people smuggling networks grow more sophisticated.

The discussion today mainly talked about when we put measures in place that we do it in a cooperative way as far as sharing background information. Australia's policy of resettlement in Nauru attracted attention. The concept of having a third country arrangement in a very formal way is something that's fairly new to the group and people have been asking me about that as well. The UK attempted a similar scheme with Rwanda but just four people were resettled at a cost of over a billion Australian dollars. Newly minted Home Affairs Minister Shabana Mahmood could be looking to mimic Australia but in the meantime has announced the UK will cut the number of visas granted to countries that reject deportations. And if one of your citizens has no right to be in our country you do need to take them back. For all five nations the specifics may be different but the challenge is the same. Pressure on borders is rising and public discontent is growing. I don't think Five Eyes has ever been more important for the simple reason that our different systems have never been under more attacks.
