Rwanda has confirmed the arrival of the first group of seven deportees from the United States, following a bilateral agreement allowing Kigali to review and approve migrants before entry. The identities of the deportees have not been disclosed, but authorities stated they are being accommodated by an international organization and are receiving visits from both the International Organization for Migration and Rwandan social services. 

Three of the deportees have indicated a desire to return to their home countries, while the remaining four wish to remain in Rwanda. This arrangement is part of Rwanda's commitment to accept up to 250 individuals expelled from the US, under a policy initiated by President Donald Trump. Rwanda is among four African nations with such agreements with Washington, alongside Uganda, Eswatini, and South Sudan.

A government spokesperson added that each case was vetted under the bilateral agreement which allows Kigali to review and approve migrants before granting entry. No information was provided about the identities of the deportees, but she said on Thursday that they had been accommodated by an international organization. The seven are also being visited by the International Organization for Migration as well as representatives of Rwandan social services. The spokesperson says that three of the deportees say they want to return to their home countries while the other four wish to stay and build lives in Rwanda. Earlier in August, Kigali said it would accept up to 250 people to be expelled from the United States under President Donald Trump's anti-immigrant agenda. Rwanda is one of four African countries that have reached deportation agreements with Washington. The others are Uganda, Eswatini and South Sudan.

It's been 13 days since President Trump said he could strike a peace deal in Ukraine, following his meeting with Russia's leader, Vladimir Putin. But Russia shows no signs of backing down, launching an aerial assault on Kyiv.
