Firefighters in Colorado are working overtime to manage a growing wildfire season, with a recent report from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control highlighting a significant shortage of resources. Departments across the state are reportedly around 2,000 firefighters short of their desired staffing levels, leading to increased burnout among existing personnel due to limited opportunities for rest and replacement.

Despite these challenges, incident management teams have maintained their response capabilities with substantial assistance from out-of-state crews, resulting in a roughly equal split between local and external firefighters. This arrangement mirrors previous active fire seasons, but officials warn that if wildfires were to intensify simultaneously across the western United States, resource shortages could become more acute. Funding for firefighting efforts remains a concern, as property and sales tax revenues—key sources of support—are currently below average.

So I spoke with the agency's section chief to find out if the shortage is impacting their ability to handle the active wild season fire season that we've seen. Although it's a shortage, we're gonna do everything we can to protect our communities. And yes, burnout is a real issue for the firefighters with not having somebody there to replace them or you know, to get more time off. It's it's a tough job and it does take a toll on people when they don't get enough downtime. So the report shows that departments across colorado are around 2000 firefighters short of where they want to be. I asked if this has affected how incident management teams have tackled some of the fires like the historic leaf fire and she said no. Now they have gotten a lot of help from out of state crews, which she says is a good solution at least for the time being. What we were concerned about is if everything in the west Oregon, Washington, if everything was burning at the same time, then yes, we probably would struggle a little bit with some of our resources from out of state. However, that didn't happen luckily. Uh and so what we've got is a really strong presence to deal with these fires. So between the local crews from colorado departments and the ones from out of state, there is a 50 50 split on who is battling these fires in colorado. Now this is around the same ratio as there was in 2020, which was also an historically active fire season. That's when the pine gulch fire became colorado's third largest ever. Now the question moving forward comes down to funding more than 80% of colorado's wildland firefighting efforts come from property and sales tax, both of which are lower than where they normally are.
