Extreme weather can hit every corner of the country, but some areas are more vulnerable than others. See which counties are the most at-risk.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released a National Risk Index that evaluates the vulnerability of every county in the United States to 18 different types of natural disasters. The index considers factors such as disaster frequency, population and property at risk, and each area's resilience.

Los Angeles County ranks highest due to threats from earthquakes and wildfires, as well as rare risks like ice storms. New York's Bronx and New York counties are also identified as high risk, facing threats from winter weather, coastal flooding, tornadoes, and earthquakes. Miami-Dade County is noted for its high risk from hurricanes and lightning.

From tornadoes to tsunamis, almost every corner of the country is at risk for some form of extreme weather, and now FEMA is breaking down where the most danger lies. It looks at how often the disasters occur in the area, the amount of people and property at risk, and how well the area is able to bounce back. And when it comes to risks, L.A. County takes the top spot. Between earthquakes and wildfires alone, that's no shocker. But the area is also at high risk for ice storms, even though they're pretty rare there. FEMA's tour of natural disaster dangers takes us to the Big Apple next. Bronx and New York counties are neighbors and twins when it comes to weather dangers. Winter weather is a way of life here, and you can count on coastal flooding. But tornadoes and earthquakes are also listed as major risks because of the sheer devastation they'd cause in such a packed area. Miami-Dade County rounds out the list, and its spot in the disaster danger ranking can be summed up in two words, hurricanes and lightning.
