Australia's Federal Parliament has introduced 'Baby Priya's bill', which aims to make it illegal for employers to cancel paid parental leave when a worker's child is stillborn or dies. The bill was prompted by the experience of a family whose paid parental leave was cancelled after the premature death of their daughter Priya, leading them to launch a petition that quickly gained over 30,000 signatures.

The proposed legislation seeks to provide grieving families with the time needed to mourn without the pressure of returning to work early. Supporters of the bill highlight that more than 2,200 Australian babies are stillborn each year, and the change is described as a matter of equity and justice.

A bittersweet moment for a family who've lived through the unfathomable. In June last year, Priya was born premature in a Sydney hospital, just shy of 25 weeks. And for 42 days, she fought to survive, but it was all too much. Her mother, who doesn't want to be identified, had her three months of paid parental leave cancelled by her employer. In the eyes of the law at the time, it was legal. It was terribly unfair. So Priya's family launched a petition, calling on the Albanese government to make it illegal for employers to cancel paid parental leave if a worker's child is stillborn or dies. It quickly gained more than 30,000 signatures. Today, it became a reality. Baby Priya's bill was introduced to Federal Parliament. We hope to take some of the stress away from parents during an inconceivably difficult time. This is a matter of equity and justice. On average, more than 2,200 Australian babies are stillborn every year. That's around six per day. Baby Priya's bill ensures families can spend the time to grieve and not have to return to work early. I wanted to try and make the world a better place and to get that in a small way is really heartening. On the other hand, you know, we would rather have our daughter.
