In its strongest indication yet, it will break with the United States and Israel over a contentious obstacle in the Middle East conflict. This momentum, this progress is welcome, but it's also conditional. Those conditions, the release of all hostages and the assurance Hamas will not play a role in a future state, as discussed in a phone call between Australia's and the UK's Prime Ministers late last night. The leaders agreed on the importance of using the international momentum to secure a ceasefire. That momentum building after Canada announced it will follow France and the UK. Canada intends to recognise the state of Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Australia remaining tight lipped. I'm not going to put a time frame on it. It is extraordinary that the Australian Government would contemplate recognising such a state. The Coalition condemning the Government for getting ahead of itself. It doesn't actually change much on the ground to have Australia or any other country recognise a Palestinian state if Israel refuses to do so. We're kidding ourselves if we don't think that Hamas is running the show in there. As Gaza's crisis worsens, its people riddled with famine and desperation. Recognising the Palestinian state reflects a fundamental shift in the European position toward the Palestinian cause. Conflict in the Middle East has dominated large chunks of the Albanese Government's first sitting period since being re-elected. Meanwhile it would prefer to have the focus on fulfilling election promises like cutting student debt and making medicines cheaper.
