Despite submitting maintenance requests over the past ten weeks, teachers report that the main AC system remains unfixed, with temperatures in some classrooms reaching up to 87 degrees.

The district has provided portable AC units as a temporary measure, but teachers say these are inadequate and require frequent maintenance. The San Diego Education Association Union filed a grievance with the district, which was denied, and teachers plan to voice their concerns at an upcoming board meeting. The district has stated that a new compressor has been ordered and hopes to have the system operational soon.

Frustrated teachers at McKinley Elementary School near North Park say San Diego Unified isn't doing enough to help their classrooms beat the heat. New at 6 o'clock, ABC 10 News reporter Dani Miskell spoke with the teachers trying to advocate for their students' health. Teachers here at McKinley Elementary School say that for the last 10 weeks they have been pleading with the district to fix the AC and in that time these teachers tell me that there have been kindergartners working in classrooms that have been hotter than 80 degrees. We have headaches, we've had students with bloody noses. Every day multiple staff, over a hundred students walk into classrooms that are not properly ventilated. These are the conditions kindergarten teacher Frances McKenzie has been seeing since the school year started. Yes we're fed up, it's unacceptable. She was told a maintenance order to fix the AC was put in two months ago. It's still not been fixed. Instead the district brought in some portable AC units which leak, have duct tape around them and some teachers are required to empty them daily. On a warmer day it's reached up to 86 and 87 degrees in the afternoon. San Diego Unified School District has had this issue before. In September of last year I covered a similar incident at Garfield Elementary School. We have learned that several students were sent to the nurse's office because they were getting sick from the heat. No sense of urgency at all, it is not a priority at all. Janelle Small is also a teacher at McKinley Elementary and she's speaking on behalf of the San Diego Education Association Union. We did file a grievance with the district and everyone got denied and they still have no air conditioning but it was shown that their issues were resolved by the district. These are the classrooms that house the three-year-olds and the four-year-olds and the special education students. The district emailed me and said the units serving the classrooms needed a new compressor and it's been ordered. They hope to have everything up and running by next week.
