The European Union has approved a major trade deal with Latin America's Mercosur bloc, 25 years after negotiations began. A majority of member states backed the agreement. But critics say it forces European farmers to compete against low-quality, low-price food.

Farmers in Belgium, France, and Poland have staged protests in response to the European Union's approval of the Mercosur free trade deal, which they argue could lead to unfair competition and threaten their livelihoods. The deal, negotiated for 25 years, involves Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, and is expected to increase imports of agricultural products such as beef and poultry.

Despite opposition from several EU countries, the European Commission pledged an additional $50 billion for agriculture, securing enough support to pass the deal. The agreement, which creates a free trade zone with over 750 million potential customers, still requires approval from the European Parliament, where further protests are anticipated.

In response, the European Commission pledged an additional 50 billion dollars for the agricultural sector this week, convincing Italy, which had been wavering in its support, and pushing the deal over the finishing line. We've always said that we're in favour of the Mercosur agreement when there are sufficient guarantees for our farmers. Well, Italy joined countries including Germany and Spain in backing Mercosur here in Brussels at a meeting of EU ambassadors. France, Ireland, Austria, Poland and Hungary voted against it but their opposition wasn't enough to scupper the deal that's been some 25 years in the making. With a new free trade zone of more than 750 million potential customers, the EU plans to increase exports of cars, machinery, pharmaceuticals and luxury goods. Supporters also say the deal will help the bloc to build vital new alliances to counter pressure from China and the impact of US tariffs.
