At the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires, two families met while their young sons were receiving critical care. After the passing of two-year-old Luca, his parents chose to donate his heart, which was successfully transplanted into one-year-old Felipe, who had been awaiting a donor for five months. This marked the first pediatric heart transplant in Argentina from a donor in controlled asystole, a procedure involving donation after cardiac arrest rather than brain death.

Felipe's recovery is ongoing, and both families have since joined efforts to raise awareness about the importance of pediatric organ donation. The families expressed gratitude and hope that their experience will encourage more families to consider organ donation for children in need.

Family turns loss into life by donating late son’s heart

They met when their children were hospitalized at the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires, a private health care institution. Originally from the province of Neuquén, they had taken a break from their lives to help Luca and Felipe move forward. Luca, two years old, had received a liver transplant. Felipe, one year old, had been supported for five months by an artificial heart that kept him alive while he waited for a donor. They arrived two days after Luca's transplant, and they transferred us the same day to a therapy room, both of us together as well. When they told us that there was nothing more they could do for Luca, well, it took us two days to process. And then we spoke with his doctor, Pedro, and we asked him if there was a possibility of donating his organs. And well, one day he came and said, guys, it can be done, and it will be attempted only with his heart. It was, in truth, a very difficult path, because we knew that Luca was not well. She already knew it. Her son was sick. And she told me, knowing that Felipe was a possible recipient, because he was the first one on the list. They were compatible in blood and size. And while she comes one day and tells me, they told us, yes, that she can donate. The procedure is going to be carried out tomorrow morning. And almost in parallel, they came to notify us that we were going into surgery. So we already knew that it was Luca's heart. This is how the first pediatric heart transplant was performed at the Italian hospital, from a donor in controlled asystole, meaning one whose death was due to cardiac arrest and not brain death, which until now was the only established practice in Argentina for heart donation. A doctor who was there with us calls me and says, Dad, come give him a kiss. They removed everything from his chest, and I gave him a kiss on the heart and said, son, give life. And he, like a warrior, kept fighting and made this possible. The transplant always has a moment in which the operating room stops, which is when we are all waiting for the organ that was implanted in a new body to start beating. And the truth is that, in this case, it quickly adapted well. It started beating without any problems. The first video Pam sends us is a video of Felipe's heart beating in his body. And, well, obviously, it's a huge mix of emotions, but it makes us happy because that's it. I mean, his heart is there. They saved our son's life. They saved it because Felipe didn't have any more time. They are the parents of our hearts, literally. Felipe now continues his recovery from the transplant. His mother and Luca's mother accompany him as they embark on a new mission. The idea is to continue talking about pediatric donation, precisely for all those who are still waiting.
