For most households across the country, summer electricity bills are causing some sticker shock.

Electricity bills across the nation are rising due to several converging factors. Infrastructure costs make up a significant portion of bills, as utilities invest in modernizing aging systems. Increased demand, particularly from data centers and commercial customers, is also driving up consumption. Higher natural gas prices, which account for a large share of electricity production, have surged and are expected to continue rising. Additionally, recent policy changes, including the halting of renewable energy initiatives and the repeal of green energy incentives, are anticipated to further increase costs for consumers. Experts suggest that these combined factors will continue to impact electricity bills moving forward.

Factors that have led to rising electricity bills across the nation

A lot of things go into our electric bills and a lot depends on where you live. One thing we all have in common, infrastructure. I think it's important to understand that most of your electricity bill is infrastructure and you're paying for the infrastructure we have right now. Michael Boyle is with the nonpartisan energy and climate policy think tank Energy Innovation and says modernization of our aging infrastructure is meeting with higher demand and higher natural gas costs, which accounts for about 40% of this country's production. It's kind of a wicked, wicked problem right now, coupled with the international supply chain and trade issues that are really complicating things. Natural gas supply costs surged the first quarter of this year and the Energy Information Administration expects 2026 prices to be double those of 2024, in part because of increased demand. The United States will lead in AI. We're going to balance two things. We got to win the AI race and stop the crazy rises in electricity prices. The Energy Department projects next year, data centers and other commercial customers will use more electricity than households for the first time ever. It comes as the Trump administration halts renewable energy initiatives. We are adamantly going to stop that in the United States. Repealing many of the Biden era green energy incentives and a Boyle sees that driving up prices even higher.
