The extreme heat will peak across the Northeast Friday with feels-like temperatures over 105 degrees possible. This heat will fuel scattered storm development along a cold front as it moves southeast.

The Northeastern United States is experiencing a significant heatwave, with cities such as Newark, New York, Philadelphia, and Wilmington potentially reaching or tying record high temperatures. The combination of high temperatures and humidity is expected to make conditions feel even hotter, with heat indices in some areas possibly reaching dangerous levels.

Relief may come in the form of thunderstorms, which are forecast to develop in the afternoon and evening, especially across New England and parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. These storms are expected to bring cooler air and a change in the air mass, but the extreme heat will persist until then.

In fact, we could set records here in the Northeast. Look at Newark, New Jersey. We could hit 100. 2016, 2010, a lot of these are going to be dropping, and it's only been nine years. Not a good sign that we keep breaking records in such a short amount of time. You want to see it stand for decades before you break it, but with the warming climate, we keep breaking and breaking a lot of records that have been standing for not too long. We could tie a record in New York, Philly, and into Wilmington as well. Here's the thing, though. It's not only going to be record setting when it comes to the actual thermometer, but you throw the moisture on top of it, and it's going to feel a lot hotter than those records. Philly could feel like 108. Oof, oof! You want to get on the Schuylkill River to get some cooler air blowing on you. Temperatures are going to stay in that danger zone all the way into the evening hours. That's when we might get a little relief from some storms. Remember, we're getting the system that's going to come through today and then cool us off behind it, so there is that possibility of some thunderstorms, but you'll want them to come through because you will see a change in the air mass as we head into tomorrow. So there are your showers and storms this afternoon, mainly into New England, and a few scattered storms cutting across Pennsylvania into New Jersey, more abundant as we head around seven o'clock.
