A two-year-old girl named Willow, diagnosed with leukemia in July, has remained at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne while undergoing intensive treatment. After developing a rare and aggressive fungal infection that required multiple surgeries, doctors referred her to the Alfred Hospital for experimental hyperbaric chamber therapy to address infection that could not be surgically removed.

Willow completed 25 sessions in the hyperbaric chamber, and although her condition is rare and data is limited, medical staff have observed promising results. Her family remains hopeful as she continues her treatment journey.

Full of energy, with a cheeky grin, little Willow is fighting for her life. The two-year-old was diagnosed with leukaemia in July and rushed to the Royal Children's Hospital where she has remained ever since. Chemotherapy treatment started immediately. For a long period of time she was extremely unwell with dangerous and high fevers, high heart rate. She contracted a rare and aggressive fungal infection and has undergone four rounds of surgery to remove it, taking out her spleen and a section of her liver. In Willow's case some of it was wrapped around quite critical structures, so around blood vessels that meant that it couldn't all be removed. She was referred to the Alfred Hospital's hyperbaric chamber in hope it would remove the remaining infection. The whole experience of being able to get into hyperbaric, I mean it was very experimental and there was never any guarantees it would have any impact on Willow's outcome. During the sessions in the chamber, Willow would watch the air ambulance take off and land. She was always looking out there and we knew that coming in, we were really hopeful that there would be a helicopter coming in. With the help of doctors and nurses, she was invited on a VIP tour. We haven't had best of luck in some areas at the moment, so I was really fortunate and lucky that she was able to get that experience. And her 25 sessions in the hyperbaric chamber have provided some hope. A condition that, it's so rare it's hard to accumulate a lot of data about it, but we are seeing really promising results. Willow still has a long journey ahead of her. It's just given us that little bit of hope that this isn't her last Christmas. Sophie Jacobson, 10 News.
