The Trump administration has used the government shutdown to lay off more than 4,000 federal workers, with plans to go further, according to budget chief Russell Vought.

Over 4,000 federal employees, including approximately 600 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have been laid off, with the administration planning further reductions. A former CDC scientist, whose identity was concealed, expressed concern that these cuts would halt critical public health programs and increase preventable deaths, particularly as the agency faces ongoing disease outbreaks such as measles in South Carolina. 

The Department of Health and Human Services stated that the layoffs targeted non-essential positions to reduce bureaucracy. However, the scientist warned that the CDC's ability to respond to public health threats would be significantly diminished, and noted that the entire CDC staff responsible for briefing Congress on disease outbreaks in Washington was among those terminated.

For everyday Americans, is their health, their public health at risk? Absolutely. It's going to mean more deaths, more preventable deaths. People will absolutely die from the impact of this administration. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services said the layoffs were part of cutting a bloated bureaucracy and that the positions were deemed non-essential by their divisions. But the scientist we spoke to said the cuts at the CDC, where roughly 600 people were terminated over the weekend, will impact responses to disease outbreaks like the measles outbreak in South Carolina. Five new cases were reported yesterday, bringing the total to 16 since July with 139 students quarantined. The surge capacity of the CDC is going to be significantly hampered with these cuts. It's going to impede our ability to respond to public health outbreaks and all of these threats are on the rise. And among the cuts made by the administration, the entire CDC staff here in Washington, which briefs Congress on disease outbreaks across the country.
