A fake video styled as a Euronews report has circulated on Russian Telegram channels, falsely blaming Ukrainian refugees for a fire at a bar in the Swiss ski resort of Comontana that killed 40 people. The manipulated video uses AI-generated voices of Euronews journalists and introduces baseless claims, including accusations against a Ukrainian refugee, Oleg K, despite official Swiss statements refuting any Ukrainian involvement.

Swiss authorities have confirmed that the only individuals under investigation for the fire are the bar's owners, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, for suspected manslaughter and arson by negligence. There have been no reports of Ukrainian casualties or injuries, and all official announcements contradict the claims made in the fake video.

Ukrainian refugees have been wrongly blamed for the Swiss bar fire in a fake video. This looks like a standard, trustworthy Euronews report about the fire that tore through a bar in the Swiss ski resort of Comontana on New Year's Day, doesn't it? In reality though, it's a manipulated video that uses a real Euronews report as a basis to spread misinformation and wrongly blame Ukrainian refugees for the blaze, which officials say killed 40 people. The fake video has spread over Russian telegram channels and has the hallmarks of being part of a propaganda campaign designed to discredit Ukrainians under the guise of legitimate news outlets. Looking at them side by side, the real Euronews report and the fake video start off in the same way, talking about the number of casualties at the Le Constellation bar, their ages and nationalities. But things start to get questionable when the fake video mentions that the tragedy could have been the result of jealousy-driven arson. It launches an unfounded accusation against a Ukrainian refugee called Oleg K, who it claims allegedly started the fire after arguing with his girlfriend the day before over her involvement with other men. She supposedly died in the fire. Oleg K worked at Le Constellation and was familiar with its communication system, the video says. But there is absolutely no evidence for any of these claims and all of the official announcements from the Swiss authorities refute them. The only people currently under investigation for the fire are the bar's owners, French couple Jacques and Jessica Moretti, for suspected manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence and arson by negligence. They deny wrongdoing. There have been no reports of Ukrainian involvement and official numbers say that there were no Ukrainian casualties or injuries.
