The chief of the EU executive pledged Europe's full support for Syria's recovery after meeting interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on Friday.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, alongside European Council President António Costa, has pledged that the European Union will provide extensive support for Syria's recovery and reconstruction. The EU will allocate approximately 620 million euros in financial assistance over the current and following year, covering humanitarian aid, early recovery, and bilateral support.

This commitment comes as Syria seeks to rebuild after years of conflict that began in 2011. The EU fully lifted its economic sanctions against Syria in May 2025, having initially suspended major sanctions earlier in the year.

Ursula von der Leyen, together with European Council President António Costa, told Syrian President Hamed al-Shara on Friday. We want to strengthen our engagement with financial support of around 620 million euros for this year and for the next year. This financial support will include humanitarian aid of course, but also early recovery support and bilateral support among us. Syria is attempting to chart a new course following years of war that began with Bashar al-Assad's violent suppression of pro-democracy demonstrations in 2011. The EU fully lifted economic sanctions against Syria in May 2025, after initially suspending major sanctions in February. The sanctions had been imposed in 2011.

Iran's army is threatening to join the crackdown on protesters as demonstrations against the regime grow and the death toll mounts. Huge crowds have taken to the streets across the Islamic Republic. Iran's Revolutionary Guard calls them "terrorists." Haley Ott has more details.
