European leaders drew a clear line over Greenland, vowing an "unflinching" response to Washington's threats even as U.S. President Donald Trump said he was ready to hold a meeting in Davos about his plans to take the autonomous Danish territory.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump announced a 10% import tax on goods from eight countries that have opposed his attempt to acquire Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen, criticized the tariffs and stressed the need to uphold existing trade agreements between the EU and the US.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Denmark's Prime Minister also voiced strong opposition to the tariffs, calling for dialogue and warning of necessary countermeasures if the taxes are implemented. US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant urged restraint, expressing hope that a prolonged trade conflict could be avoided.

At the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, there's one issue dominating many others. Donald Trump's renewed threats over Greenland and how Europe and its allies will react. The US president has said Washington will impose a 10 per cent import tax on goods from eight countries who've opposed Trump's bid to acquire the Arctic island, which is an autonomous part of Denmark. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose country Trump has previously threatened to annex, stood firm. Canada strongly opposes tariffs over Greenland and calls for focused talks to achieve our shared objectives of security and prosperity in the Arctic. Overall, European leaders sought to present a united front against Trump, including French President Emmanuel Macron, who used his address to slam the rise of imperialist ambitions and the quote, fundamentally unacceptable tariffs. EU Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen called the additional levies a mistake. The European Union and the United States have agreed to a trade deal last July. And in politics, as in business, a deal is a deal. Meanwhile in Denmark, the Prime Minister said Europe would have no choice but to respond to any import taxes. It's not because anyone in Europe wants this, but I believe it would be the right thing to do. However, until February 1st, we will naturally work to prevent this from happening. Donald Trump is set to address the forum on Wednesday. His Treasury Secretary Scott Besant told attendees to quote, sit back, take a deep breath and do not retaliate, voicing confidence that the US and Europe could find a solution and avoid what some have warned could become a prolonged trade war.
