Non-profit organization Encircle has opened its fifth LGBTQ+ youth center in Ogden's historic downtown, marking its first location built from the ground up. The center offers therapy, support groups, and community events for LGBTQ+ youth aged 12 to 25, with licensed therapists available for both in-person and virtual sessions.

The initiative comes in response to concerning mental health statistics among LGBTQ+ youth in Utah, with research indicating that supportive environments and adults can significantly reduce suicide risk. The center aims to provide a safe, welcoming space that fosters belonging and acceptance.

There is something new to see along Washington Blvd in Ogden's historic downtown. I'm Maya Constantino and it's a colorful space that's now home to one non-profit's fifth LGBTQ plus youth center, giving local teens a place to connect and belong. When Ryan Sanders came out at 17, they were searching for a place to call home. Having this community and realizing that we're all very similar, we're all just people, we're all just going through this together. They found it at Encircle. Encircle first opened in Provo in 2017. The Ogden location marks its first from the ground up build. The center was once just a hill of grass, but now with the help of donors and builders, it's a place for belonging. This place is so magical. The center provides therapy, support groups, and events like art amusing nights. You see it just come over them with how this space just exudes love and acceptance. Chambers says that acceptance is vital. A recent Trevor project shows that 42% of LGBTQ plus youth in Utah considered suicide in 2024 and 11% attempted. But research shows having one supportive adult can reduce that risk by 40%. We know that could literally save that youth's life. Just that one caring adult to say, I see you, I hear you, I love you. It's needed. We need to help save these kids. For Ryan, that's what makes this house a home. It's showing an example of what can be, rather than trying to enforce rules on anyone or a lifestyle, it's just showing this is what it can be like if we just like each other, if we just support each other. The center is now open. Licensed therapists are available during the week, offering in-person and virtual sessions and they accept several major insurances, including Medicaid.
