The electric wheelchair of an 11-year-old boy with a rare condition was stolen. Police are investigating.

Axton Bird, an 11-year-old from Midvale, Utah, relies on an electric wheelchair due to a rare condition called AMC, which severely limits his mobility. After years of waiting and community support, Axton received a donated wheelchair, which he uses for independence. 

Recently, the wheelchair was reported stolen from the family's home, significantly impacting Axton's ability to move independently. The Unified Police Department is investigating the theft and has asked anyone with information to contact Non-Emergency Dispatch, with the option to remain anonymous.

Oh, that was so exciting. I was holding back tears recording this, like so excited. I mean just how cool is that? Meet 11-year-old Axton Bird. We'd go to the church parking lot and he's always been like, faster, faster. This is his dad Jason's motorcycle. Axton uses his own electric wheelchair to get around because he has a condition called AMC. It is a very, very rare condition. Actually one in 3,000 live births are born with it. And in fact, Axton kind of got the more brunt end of it to where most people don't have so severely in all four limbs as he does. Axton can't walk much because he can't bend his joints and his muscles are weak. And I won't stop until we're done. Until everyone knows about it, huh? You might have seen Jason on FOX 13 News before. He has been doing motorcycle rides to help educate people about his son's condition. And even tried to get him his own electric wheelchair after insurance denied help. So we waited five long years until our physical therapist found someone who gets wheelchairs, old wheelchairs, and parts them out. He'll take parts from this and parts from that and make a new wheelchair. Someone donated this to Axton. You see the joystick right there under his elbow? That's how he's ever able to push on it and go. It's not really fun when I have to be pushed around instead of not being able to just move. But that's not the case anymore. They usually park the wheelchair at their house tucked next to this motorcycle, but it wasn't there on Tuesday morning. It makes it really hard. So it's just so, so hard to see that someone could take a child's, you know, independence away. So Jason and Axton are looking for this missing wheelchair. It's going to be pretty difficult. I worry about him getting knocked over in the hallways by other kids. He loses balance pretty easy. He doesn't have the use of his arms and hands. So if he was to fall over, he wouldn't be able to brace himself. So I worry about broken bones. Hoping to get it back soon. I would love to have it back so I could, like, move myself. Unified Police Department tells me they are investigating this incident and are trying to figure out what exactly happened to get Axton his electric wheelchair back as soon as possible.
