It's about an ordinary person and living a normal life and how from normal the world changed his life to chaos and fear. Welcome to the fringe Palestine! Artists from Palestine and the Diaspora are showcasing theatre, dance, comedy, music and poetry in Edinburgh, all uncensored. This is really a space where people are allowed, Palestinian artists are allowed to just put on their work, completely unfiltered, uncensored, and for us to listen to that. It's a way of pushing back against the sort of harassment and censorship that they have faced from various institutions. It can be difficult to make colonial violence funny, but let's give it a try. Samuel Abu-Warda has also brought a new show to the fringe, giving historical context to Palestinian suffering, with storytelling, absurdist humour and musical interludes. It's very difficult for me to go on stage and make jokes about the washing up or I don't know how funny our parents are or things like that. I really struggled and so I had to slowly cobble together a comedy set followed by a comedy hour that tries to speak truthfully and honestly about the structures that we're in, that have directly contributed to the genocide of the Palestinian people. Audiences are also enjoying Alaa Shahada's show, a coming-of-age drama set in Jenin. These artists refuse to be defined only by war. Putting their pain, humour, joy and grief uncensored on stage is a chance to touch hearts and minds in a different way to the daily images of suffering. Their hope?
