Transit centers have become vital for those fleeing, offering temporary safety as families seek more secure locations further west, even as the conflict continues to spread.

There is a strategic weight to the humanitarian emergency you are seeing right now. Russia's offensive in the east is spreading, attacks are intensifying. People living near the front line in the Dnipropetrovsk region are evacuating. Dozens of people a day for weeks now. I don't want to leave, but there's nothing, everything is destroyed. There's no hospital, no shops, everything is broken. Something always hits here. It's scary to even step outside the house. At evacuation points things move quickly. The danger remains. Nearby Pokrovsk is a vital hub for Ukraine. And Russia has not stopped trying to take it. Small groups, short goodbyes, last looks. Then it is time to go. For some, this is the moment they realize it could be the last goodbye. We're waiting for another group to arrive before heading to an evacuation center. I've seen people hugging and crying, friends and neighbors saying their farewells. The volunteers here, their challenge remains the same as it has throughout the war. Convincing people that it is now time to leave, to abandon their homes. Many don't want to, which is understandable, but there is a harsh reality playing out here right now. This place has become too close to a front line that keeps getting closer. Evacuation police routinely in the line of fire say things are getting worse. Lives here are packed down to what they can carry. Some barely able to carry themselves. Russian drone strikes are frequent in the area evacuation vehicles park as close to natural cover as they can. Squeezing in safer than being out in the open. A successful mission, a short celebration. Then it is back to work. Transit centers like this have become a lifeline once again. People hide in basements. Most of the time they sit without electricity, without water. So there are a lot of requests for evacuation. Children caught in the war have a rare chance to play in relative quiet. For a moment able to forget perhaps, they may have left home for the last time. Oleksandr and his family were among those who evacuated from Slovyanka. He locked his doors, took his key and says he's not sure he'll be able to go back to the only home he's ever known. But staying, he said, would have meant gambling with his son's lives. We will go further. We will look for something. I don't know where, but we will look. I have to go work, look for a job, feed my two children. My mother is a pensioner. I need to feed them and move on for as long as it will be like this. Like so many Ukrainians, their lives are packed into the trunk of a car. Looking for a safer place to live, they are headed west. But so is the Russian advance.
