Intensified fighting in South Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has led to a mass exodus of refugees into neighboring Burundi. Over 80,000 Congolese have crossed the border since last month, bringing Burundi's refugee population close to 200,000 and overwhelming local resources. 

Despite a peace agreement signed in December by the presidents of DRC and Rwanda, brokered by the United States, violence persists in both South and North Kivu. Refugee camps in Burundi are overcrowded, with shortages of water, medicine, and shelter, and many new arrivals are forced to sleep outdoors as aid agencies struggle to meet growing needs.

I've been displaced several times because of the fighting. Went to different villages to find safety. Finally decided to come here. Eight thousand Congolese refugees are now living here, displaced by renewed fighting across the border in South Kivu Province, in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Jetem Odira arrived last month. She shows us where 11 family members sleep inside a single tent. My parents died in February. I saved myself. My siblings were also killed. My uncle and his family helped me get here. More than 80,000 people have fled into Burundi since last month. A country already grappling with its own challenges is now hosting close to 200,000 refugees. The camp is overcrowded. There isn't enough water, medicine or proper sanitation. The rainy season has only made conditions worse. Many of the refugees have come with nothing. They are traumatized. Many do not even have tents to sleep on. They are forced to sleep in open spaces like this. A peace deal was meant to stop the violence, signed by the presidents of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda and brokered by US President Donald Trump. But fighting continues in both South and North Kivu. Since the deal was signed in December, more than half a million people have been displaced in South Kivu alone. Both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire. For the refugees here, the promise of peace feels hollow. We've been speaking to our friends about the situation back home. They are suffering. Some have been killed. They have been robbed. There's a lot of looting. Others have fled to other areas. Aid agencies and the Burundian government say resources are stretched thin. Dawn of finding is slow to come. Yet every so often, another Congolese refugee arrives. Another child. Another mouth to feed.
