Billions of years ago, our planet looked very different, including its coloring. New research suggests that early oceans were green, not blue, giving our planet a green hue overall.

Recent research indicates that Earth's oceans were green, not blue, between 3 billion and 600 million years ago. This coloration was caused by cyanobacteria, which used chlorophyll to photosynthesize sunlight, absorbing red and blue light and reflecting green.

Scientists note that a similar phenomenon could occur again due to rising sea temperatures and increasing phytoplankton populations. A 2023 study found that over half of Earth's oceans have developed a green hue in the past two decades, suggesting ongoing environmental changes.

Earth’s first oceans were green

We know early Earth looked much different than it does today, but a new study paints quite a surreal picture. Between 3 billion years ago and 600 million years ago, our planet would have been called the Green Planet, not the Blue Planet. That's right, the first oceans of our planet weren't blue, they were green. And this could happen again with rising sea temperatures. The main culprit was cyanobacteria, which, like plants, use chlorophyll to photosynthesize the sunlight. This causes the organism to absorb red and blue light and reflect green light. If our planet were to turn green again, it would likely be due to rising phytoplankton populations rather than cyanobacteria. In fact, a 2023 study confirmed that 56% of the Earth's ocean had taken on a green hue just over the last 20 years.
