The E1 series, the world's first all-electric powerboat racing championship, hosted its inaugural African Grand Prix in Lagos, Nigeria. Teams raced battery-powered hydrofoil boats, known as race birds, which are designed to reduce drag and emissions. Team Brazil secured their best result of the season with a win in Lagos.

The championship features nine teams, some backed by celebrities such as Will Smith and Didier Drogba, who played a key role in bringing the event to Africa. The Lagos government anticipates the event will generate significant tourism and hospitality revenue. Lagos is the sixth city to host the E1 series this year, with the season set to conclude in Miami.

The waters of Lagos Lagoon were the stage of the latest race in the E1 series, the first all-electric powerboat racing championship. Sunday's race in Nigeria marked the series' maiden Grand Prix in Africa. The event featured teams piloting battery-powered hydrofoil boats. Known as race birds, they glide above the water to reduce drag and emissions. The win in Lagos for Team Brazil is very important. It's the best result so far in the season so it's amazing. The nine teams taking part in the championship have celebrity backers, including US actor Will Smith and former Ivorian football player Didier Drogba. Incredibly important to us to bring a race to Africa, obviously Didier is one of our team owners and he was very passionate about bringing the race. Enormous for us to bring the technology, the sort of messages about sustainability that we're bringing to Africa and to celebrate honestly, like we are now, just a party. That's what we want to bring. The Lagos government said it expected the event to generate up to $100 million in tourism and hospitality revenue. I think personally it was a very good event. I think it was a way to show the strength and the extent to which Nigeria can bring together massive events like this because we're the first African country to do this sort of thing so it's really big for us. Lagos was the sixth city to stage the E1 championship this year, following races in Jeddah, Doha and Monaco. The season will conclude in Miami in November.
