A funeral procession was held in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, for 22 victims killed in a drone strike in Masisi. The M23 rebel group accused the Congolese army of carrying out the attack, which reportedly targeted civilians during New Year celebrations. The Congolese government has not issued a comment regarding the incident.

Despite ongoing peace efforts, fighting continues in eastern DRC, where over 100 armed groups are active and more than seven million people have been displaced. The region remains a major humanitarian crisis, with both civilian and military casualties reported.

Angry and overcome by pain, 22 coffins were paraded by the M23 rebels before a crowd and the families of the victims in Goma, capital of North Kivu province, on Thursday. The M23 has accused the Congolese army of responsibility for the drone strike that it says targeted civilians in Masisi. We lost comrades, friends, loved ones. My little sister died too. She had gone to Masisi to work, and then she died there. The Congolese government has not commented on the strike, which M23 says targeted a crowd of civilians celebrating the new year. Despite the signing of the Washington agreement and the continuation of the Doha process, fighting continues on several fronts in eastern DRC, continuing to claim numerous civilian and military casualties. We were celebrating New Year's Eve when a bomb fell on the market while we were partying. This isn't the first time this drone has arrived in Masisi. More than 100 armed groups are vying for a foothold in mineral-rich eastern Congo near the border with Rwanda, most prominently M23. The conflict has created one of the world's most significant humanitarian crises, with more than seven million people displaced.
