Search and rescue teams have managed to save 13 individuals so far. Local authorities attribute the accident to overloading, a common issue on Nigeria's rivers, and have stated that the boat driver may face prosecution for negligence if he survives. Night journeys and overloading are both prohibited in the region.

Police in Jigawa state said the driver of the boat would likely be prosecuted for negligence if he survives. Night journeys and overloading are banned.
