Dr. Salvador Placencia was sentenced to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to distributing ketamine to actor Matthew Perry in the weeks leading up to Perry's overdose death. The court clarified that Placencia was convicted for distribution of ketamine, not for distribution leading to death, which would have carried a much harsher penalty.

During the sentencing, Dr. Placencia admitted responsibility and apologized directly to Perry's mother. Family members, including Perry's sister and stepsister, accused Placencia of exploiting Perry's addiction for profit. Placencia has surrendered his medical license and will serve his sentence as ordered by the court.

Let's go right to CBS News correspondent Carter Evans, who's live for us in Los Angeles. Carter, you were in that courtroom today. What happened? This is Dr Salvador Placencia that we're talking about. He pled guilty to distribution of ketamine, and he was sentenced to 30 months in prison for that charge. Those charges now the judge wanted to make it really clear because I think 30 months may seem a little low to some people for for this type of crime. He pled guilty to distribution of ketamine, not distribution of ketamine leading to death. In that case, the sentence could have been much, much greater. We did hear, though, from the defendant in court, Dr Placencia. He said he failed Mr Perry. He failed his family. There are no excuses. He must accept full responsibility. He should have protected him. He said it was my oath. And then he looked straight at Matthew Perry's mother, and he said, I am just so sorry. And Carter, we're hearing family members also spoke in court. What did they have to say? You know, they did. We heard from Matthew Perry's sister. We heard from his stepsister, and they all looked directly at the doctor who is now giving up his medical license. They all looked him directly in the eye, and he looked right back, and they said, You failed him. You failed him as a doctor. And not only that, you took advantage of him. You took advantage of him for money. You took advantage of his disease, his addiction for money, and you profited off of it. And you even sent a text calling him a moron. Let's see how much money can we get here? The doctor said he had no excuses for that. He made a terrible, terrible decision, and he is going to pay for it. He is going to spend 30 months in prison. And we also heard from his mother. She said she struggled for a while to speak, but she wanted to speak. She wanted to speak directly to him because, quote, I want you to see his mother. Hmm.
