A widespread Verizon cell phone outage lasted for several hours, impacting over 182,000 customers across the United States. Major cities such as New York, Houston, Dallas, Miami, and Atlanta reported significant disruptions, with many users unable to make calls, use data, or access a signal.

The outage raised concerns about emergency services, as New York City officials warned it could affect 911 calls. Verizon has not yet provided details on the cause but stated that engineers worked throughout the day to restore service. This incident follows a similar outage experienced by Verizon in August 2025.

A widespread Verizon cell phone outage went on for hours today, leaving thousands of customers without service across the United States. CBS News reporter Karen Waugh is in Houston, one of the hardest hit cities, with more on exactly what caused the outage. Hey Jewel, so Verizon has not yet said exactly what caused this outage, but more than 182,000 users reported not having service at some point. That's according to DownDetector, a site that tracks problems online. Throughout social media, many customers reported their cell phones had no bars or were on SOS since about noon Eastern time today. Most could not make calls to other Verizon phones, couldn't use data or had no signal whatsoever. The most reported areas included New York City, Texas cities like Houston and Dallas, along with Miami, Atlanta and others. New York City emergency management even said the outage might affect those trying to call 911. In a statement, a Verizon spokesperson told CBS News their engineers have been working all day to fix the issue. Adding quote, we understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience.
