Some moderate members from both parties have shown willingness to compromise, but party leadership is maintaining pressure to hold the line. Both sides are facing criticism and pressure from constituents, with no immediate resolution in sight.

The federal shutdown is impacting tens of thousands of people across the nation. At the center of the disagreement is health care tax credits for 22 million low- and middle-class Americans. It lowers health insurance costs when buying policies through the Affordable Care Act's marketplaces. I want to bring in Julie Grace Brufke. She covers Capitol Hill for 24-Site News, and she joins me now to talk about this. So, you know, the other thing that we should point out, because one of the talking points from the president and the Republicans is that the Democrats want to provide those tax credits, and they want to provide health care to undocumented immigrants, which, as you know, the law does not allow for illegal undocumented immigrants to receive health care or the Affordable Care Act credits, as the law stands right now. So that sort of negates one of the arguments that they're making. The other one is, of course, that this is not going to expire until next year, so why are Democrats holding up the process now? So at what point could there be a voice that brings both sides together? Well, I've spoken to a number of moderate Republicans that would also like to see these Obamacare subsidies kind of continue there. And I've spoken with some members close to leadership that have said that they do think there should be health care reforms and further negotiations. Now, the Republican point of view right now is Democrats should get on board with a clean CR while they continue to negotiate that out, and Democrats feel they're on a time crunch. They've got until November 1st to kind of pass these subsidies while insurers are kind of looking to finalize their rates to be able to send out to people purchasing plans. So it's definitely both sides are really kind of digging in right now, and it's hard to see where this shutdown ends. Yeah, you make a good point. Although those credits expire at the end of next year, as you say, those letters are going out to everybody now so that they can apply for those credits. And that deadline is November 1st. So we've seen the Republican Congress pass the majority of the president's agenda items. I've seen a column from The Washington Post this morning saying that for the Democrats, this is a trap. They walked right into President Trump's trap. So do Democrats have any footing at all to get some of the things that they're fighting for, or will this all be for naught? If ultimately the Republicans persevere, what will the Democrats have to show for it? I mean, right now, Republicans feel like they have all the leverage, and Democrats are definitely digging in. They feel like this is their best chance to be able to get something there. I mean, we'll see how things pan out as people, federal workers aren't getting paychecks and how long this all drags out and how much pressure both sides get. I mean, we've seen polling kind of showing both sides taking the heat for a shutdown. So it's going to be interesting as both sides—it's kind of been a lot of partisan finger-pointing on who carries the blame right now. So I mean, we'll see how it pans out with voters back home and how that kind of turns into a pressure cooker on members to get something passed. And Julie Grace, before I let you go, what about those three Democrats who did vote with the Republicans? Any chance that there might be a couple more moderate Democrats who decide that the pain is not worth it? No, I've spoken to some Republican senators that said there were two other Democrats that Democratic leadership were kind of pressuring to stay within their party line. So I mean, I could see more Republicans—or more Democrats kind of getting on board with the Republican clean CR as time goes on there, but I mean, they're under a lot of pressure from leadership right now. So I think a lot of it will be how it pans out with voters and what they're hearing from constituents back home on who caves first. But both sides are saying they're not going to blink anytime soon.
