Many parents will describe it as their life's greatest joy. But having a child is not the common dream it once was. In 2025, only 645,000 babies were born in France, outnumbered by the amount of deaths for the first time since the end of World War II. At this marketplace in Bordeaux, one student says her friends are among those reluctant to give birth. They think that with the state of the planet, for many reasons, it's not necessarily a good idea to have children, or they want to focus more on their careers, their passions, their work. Another passerby, a nurse, already has one child, but is hesitant to have a second because her family lives far away. The hardest part is when the father goes back to work and you're left alone as a mother with the child. This vendor says many of his customers fear the world is becoming more violent. The wars on our doorstep are really worrying. After World War II, France's population rebounded. It was the baby boom, 862,000 births in 1950, a third more than today. Maternity wards were full and families were often large. In 2026, the fertility rate has never been so low, one and a half children per woman, a rate not seen since the First World War. 50 years ago, women who gave birth were 26 and a half years old on average. Today, they're over 31. The marriage rate, however, is the highest it has been in 15 years, which could boost the number of babies being made.
