U.S. President Trump says the United States and China have reached a framework agreement and he'll speak about it further on Friday with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Marianne has been working on the story for us this morning. In the States, people who logged on this morning, looked at their phone, they might've expected it to be blank as far as the TikTok app was concerned. What happened? Yeah, it was supposed to go dark today, but given this development of a framework agreement, Trump signed an executive order delaying that ban until December. So TikTok is still up and running. People can post their dances and whatever else they want to post on TikTok this morning, at least for now. But this delay in that ban effectively allows TikTok to separate from their Chinese parent company of ByteDance and find an American seller. Of course, that is at the crux of this very issue that's been going on for quite some time now. And it would impact, depending on what happens here, about 170 million Americans who use this platform. At this point, the specific details of this framework agreement have not been confirmed by the Trump administration, but the president was speaking to reporters yesterday talking about the companies, he says, are interested in buying the platform. We'll be announcing that. We have a group of very big companies that want to buy it. And, you know, the kids wanted it so badly. I had parents calling me up. They don't want it for themselves. They want it for their kids. They say, if I don't get it done, they're in big trouble with their kids. And I think it's great. I hate to see value like that thrown out the window. So, auto executives- And, you know, you're talking about tens of billions of dollars. So how did we get here? Well, last year, a law was passed in the United States under the Biden administration forcing the sale of TikTok in the interest of national security concerns. That ban was supposed to take effect one day before Trump's inauguration in January. It did go dark for just a couple of hours, but then it was back online and that ban was delayed by Trump. And then the following day at the inauguration, who did we see at his inauguration? The CEO of TikTok, as well as the leaders of other big tech companies. Now, we know that Trump has spoken out against TikTok before. He said he didn't support it during his first term. He wanted to see it shut down. Now he says he likes this platform after trying it out. And we know, Heather, he also credited TikTok for helping him engage with the young voters during the last election. So for Canadian users, any impact on us here? Yeah, and for that, we reached out to Carmi Levy. He is, of course, a friend of the show, tech expert and journalist, saying that what happens in the United States will also impact the millions of users who use TikTok here in Canada, particularly when it comes to the security concerns. Here's some of what he had to say. For years, the US government said this was all about national security, but looking at the details of this deal and exactly what's happened over the six years since this first became a thing, it was obvious it was never about national security. If it was, the countless other apps in the app store that originate in China would have been targeted as well. Those are still there. Those are still collecting data and conceivably sending it back to China. Here in Canada, there was a national security review, specifically last November, and that led to this order for TikTok Canada's, rather, TikTok Canada arm to dissolve, in other words, close its offices here, though Canadians can still access TikTok, create content, and access all of the services. Of course, the year before that, federal government announcing that any federal workers can't download the app on any federal devices, but otherwise, it is business as usual. Millions, as you say, huge penetration here in Canada, so paying very close attention to what happens in that American development, too. So, thank you, Marianne, for everything this morning.
