Residents woke to the news that the severe tropical cyclone had intensified to a Category 3, yet that was no deterrent for thrill-seekers airborne in high winds. Small but intense, the storm is expected to worsen in the coming hours. The warning zone stretching from Wadair to Cape Cod, including the Tiwi Islands. Severe tropical cyclone FINA is here. We've had days to get ready for this and there's no need to panic. We are prepared but the situation is serious. Hours before landfall, trees had already been uprooted by strong winds. Told to take shelter, the city bunkered down and prepared for the worst. So same as everyone should be, 72 hours of self-sufficiency and everything's been locked away. Generators have been checked and plenty of food and water. As people stocked up, shelves were stripped bare. Then today, the major supermarkets closed their doors entirely. Woolworths is shut. I was going to see if Coles is too, but they're not essential. Coles is shut. Oh dear. But not everyone closed. If something happens, we close the doors. They're seeing shutters. The cafe will be open today and tomorrow, just in case anyone wants coffees. With nerves high, a warning to be alert but not alarmed. Don't panic. Enact your plans. We've got this. It's a region that's no stranger to wild weather. I'm just waiting to see, like everybody else. We're all prepared. We've done it before. But still, Darwin has a long night ahead.
