The Midwest and Great Lakes regions are bracing for a period of dangerous cold, with temperatures expected to drop to record or near-record lows. Michigan recently recorded 15 inches of lake effect snow, while other areas such as Louisville also saw significant snowfall. 

The coldest air of the season is forecast to arrive, with places like Spencer, Iowa, potentially reaching -14°F, breaking previous records. Road conditions are expected to worsen as road salt loses effectiveness in extreme cold, prompting authorities to advise residents to stay indoors for safety.

as we go to the north central region. Let's talk about the snow. Now you might notice the top state snow totals here. One of these is very different than the other three. That of course is Michigan with the 15 inches. Why you might be wondering, well, it's the lake effect snow. We had a very small portion of the state. Overall, had some lake effect snow the last 24 hours, and it led to that's no total. You're seeing in mirrors were. Meanwhile, everywhere else, while it's six or four and a half inches, somewhere like Louisville, where that's a significant amount of snow for Louisville overall. Now, as we transition to the next couple of days, we have another front that moves through. We do get some more snow, but the story really is the cold at this point more than it is the snow. So for the northern Plains into the Great Lakes region, it's Thursday morning. That is going to be the coldest air we have had yet this season. However, it's just going to get worse from here. We're going to be challenging records here. We're talking about sub zero temperatures. Take a look, Iowa. You get the bulk of it first, and I mean Spencer here. We're talking 14 below. The previous record is 9 from 2005 here. I mean that is significant. It's dangerous cold that you want to make sure that you are prepared for. We zoom out, look at the big picture. Wednesday night, so Thursday morning. It's the same lows were five below in Minneapolis 7 below in Fargo. Straight up zero in Green Bay. Yeah, you don't want to be out and about in that. That is for sure. Seen some ducks swimming through the water in Kansas. It'll be a different situation in places like Minneapolis come Wednesday night. Now, while it is more the cold than the snow, it's a story at this point. I do want to show you what to expect with the snow. It's just going to be some more snowflakes adding on to what you're already seeing in places like Greenup, Illinois. There on the right hand side of your screen, keeping the snow fresh, keeping the snow pretty, but still keeping some of those slick spots out there as well. And I know when the. Cold when the temperature drops below a certain point, road salt isn't even necessarily effective, and so that creates some new challenges for road crews trying to keep things safe. There the dog here in Topeka, Kansas. It has the right idea. Get right back inside. That's what you're going to want to be doing with your dogs the next couple of days.
