Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland has died at the age of 24. Texas police reported that Kneeland's death followed a police chase after a traffic stop attempt near Frisco, ending with Kneeland being found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound several hours later.

The incident has led to an outpouring of condolences from the NFL, Kneeland's agent, and his family, who remembered him for his dedication on the field and his character off it. The county medical examiner is conducting a further investigation into the circumstances of his death.

We are learning more about the tragic death of Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Neeland. So let's go to our breaking news correspondent Chanel Call in the CBS newsroom in New York with more. Chanel, what do we know? Well, just a horribly tragic story here, Jules. Officials now say the 24-year-old defensive end has died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They also say that this happened, Jules, after a police chase on Wednesday night. So here's what we know. Texas police say troopers were trying to stop the car that Neeland was driving for a traffic violation near Frisco, but they say the driver didn't stop. And so that's essentially what led to this police chase. Police say at one point they lost sight of the vehicle. Later they found it crashed and then Neeland, the driver, had run away. When they found him, that happened about three hours later, Jules. They say he'd already passed away from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. So obviously just a tragic story. We're seeing so much reaction pouring online. I want to show you what's happening on my computer. We've pulled up a bit of social media to show you. This is a tweet from the NFL. They say we're deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys Marshawn Neeland. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend, family and teammates. We're also hearing from Neeland's agent Jonathan Pursley in this statement on instagram saying, I watched him fight his way from a hopeful kid at Western Michigan with a dream to being a respected professional for the Dallas Cowboys. Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, every practice and every moment on the field. Finally, I want to show you this statement from Neeland's family. They say as Marshawn was making his mark on the football field with the Dallas Cowboys, he held an even more special place off the field as a devoted son, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, grandson and friend. He was kind, determined, humble and full of love. So, you know, obviously just such a sad story here. Jules people remembering who he was both on and off the field. And I will note as well that Neeland just on monday scored his first pro touchdown that was in a game between the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona. As for what's ahead in this case, it does appear as though again, this was a self inflicted gunshot wound, but we do know that the county's medical examiner will be taking a closer look at this case as well.
