Once upon a time, there was a curious sausage dog called Alice who, much like the fictional character, chased a rabbit down a hole. But unlike in Wonderland, there was no magic potion to shrink her down or Cheshire Cat to be her guide. Just a team of local firefighters armed with a shovel and a plumber with a drain camera. There she was, deep inside the burrow. We dug down a few holes, I tell you, before we got her. It was a delicate balance of trying to reach her without scaring her, hurting her or being hurt. Is he going to lose a finger or what? Usually really feisty. She's my next door neighbour as well. She's usually nipping at your heels. But the crew's dogged determination paid off. After six excruciating hours, the daring dachshund was free. Come here, baby. The community was elated, the owners were elated, but they were away on holiday. So it was the dog sitter that had lost the dog this time, poor Lindy, the dog sitter. We were having dinner and my husband's a volunteer firey. And he got a page saying, can everyone go to station to assist with a dog incident at the Oval? A bit of an ordeal, but all's well that ends well. Tonight, Alice returned to the scene of the crime with her partner in crime. They're on the lookout. Clearly up to her old tricks, all of them. She's back to barking at the neighbour.
