Well, new tonight. Tick tock creators are joining forces to stop a first of its kind law that will ban the popular app in one U. S. State. Yeah, five of them are suing Montana one day after their governor signed the bill. Fox fives. Stephanie Bertini joins us live with what this lawsuit means. Stephanie. Yeah, a lot of interest in this one. Montana just made headlines as the first state in the nation to outlaw the social media app. And now within the last few hours, we're learning five tick tock users specifically content creators in that state have already filed a lawsuit. To get it overturned. A tick tock ban in Montana. The governor signed a bill tweeting to protect personal and private data from the Chinese Communist Party. The social media app tweeting back this statement, calling it an infringement on First Amendment rights. The tick tock ban taking effect halfway across the country, but still not sitting well with some New Yorkers. I don't like the sound of it just because it kind of goes against our rights. I mean, I think it's not something that state should decide. I think take talk is definitely a consumer platform and I think it's a consumer platform. And as an avid user, it does make me disappointed to hear that that's something that's being mandated and take talk. Users in Montana are pushing back. We're learning with a lawsuit against the state. There are a lot of people asking and and objecting to this saying it violates First Amendment rights due process rights, so we'll have to see what occurs. The bill prohibits tick tock from operating within Montana. The penalty $10,000 per day anytime someone is offered the ability to access tick tock the fines levied against an app store or tick tock itself. Not any person. Montana lawmakers say the app is a threat to national security. This app steals information and data from users and its ability to share that data with the Chinese Communist Party is unacceptable. Tick tock is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. Lawmakers and the FBI are concerned that the Chinese government could use it to access the private data of American citizens during a congressional meeting back in March. Tick tock CEO insisted the platform was separate from the Chinese government. It is our commitment to this committee and all our users that we will keep this free from any manipulation by any government. Despite security concerns, tick tock remains popular in the US with more than 150 million users. The American Civil Liberties Union pushing back to saying the bill quote trampled on free speech. Despite the pushback, it's set to go into effect in January 2024. Steve. All right. Thanks, Stephanie.
