It has disaster written all over it, Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna told the court. The numbers are far too excessive to keep people safe. Lawyers for the Palestine Action Group argue the Harbour Bridge March in August was managed safely and successfully. Free, free Palestine! Police estimate 90,000 people attended that demonstration, but organisers claim it was up to 300,000. What makes the proposed rally at the Opera House so dangerous, police say, is the landmark's location and design, with limited exit points into the Botanic Gardens and towards Circular Quay. It's a narrow peninsula at the Opera House. We don't know how many people are expected, but it'll be in the thousands. We don't want to have a confrontation with police or other protesters or a crowd crush. The fear? Mayhem like this. The Chief Justice raising concerns about the potential for things to go terribly wrong. Nobody wants a Hillsborough tragedy occurring. The Palestine Action Group claims it has its own safeguards in place, including marshals who are experienced in dealing with a large number of protesters. Organisers also say they could stagger the crowd's departure to avoid flooding the forecourt with people. We've marched for two years with no incident or injury of the sort. We think that these arguments of public safety are often being weaponised by the police. The Court of Appeal will hand down its ruling tomorrow, ahead of the protest on Sunday.
