A Sydney court has blocked a planned pro-Palestinian march from taking place at the Sydney Opera House over safety concerns. Organisers are now considering a new location after estimating that 40,000 people would have joined the march.

The state's highest court has ruled that the Palestine Action Group cannot proceed with its planned rally at the Sydney Opera House, citing significant safety risks due to the large expected turnout compared to the venue's capacity. The court clarified that a prohibition order constitutes a total ban on an event, closing a legal loophole regarding such orders.

Despite the court's decision, the group has called for the Opera House sails to be illuminated in the colours of the Palestinian flag, a request that was not supported by officials. An alternative protest route through Sydney's CBD has been approved by police, who have warned that any attempts to gather unlawfully at the Opera House will be met with appropriate action.

Today's ruling also clearing up a legal loophole that a prohibition order is just that, a total ban of a planned event. This judgment will have very important ramifications for the right to protest in Australia. With their protest prohibited, the Palestine Action Group wants to make another statement at the Opera House, demanding the Premier illuminates the sails in the colours of the Palestinian flag. I don't think this is the time to project the Palestinian flag, certainly not. I think perhaps some gesture of unity to show that we've moved forward to a new era. Despite a peace deal in the Middle East and a court outcome, tensions persist. I'm proud to be Jewish. I'm proud to be Australian. I'm proud to be Australian. Demonstrators will still march on Sunday, a different route through the CBD approved by police, who have this warning for any agitators. I don't expect people to attend the Opera House, but if people are silly enough to and people want to flout the law or break the law, well, appropriate action will be taken.
