The mother of Mackenzie Anderson, who was killed by her ex-partner Tyrone Thompson, has expressed disappointment after a court dismissed an appeal to increase Thompson's sentence. Thompson, who was on parole for a previous assault against Anderson, was sentenced to a maximum of 22 years and six months, with a non-parole period of 15 years, for stabbing Anderson 78 times in front of a young child.

The sentencing judge considered Thompson's mental health and childhood disadvantage as factors reducing his moral culpability. Chief Justice Andrew Bell acknowledged the family's grief and indicated he might have imposed a slightly higher sentence, but found the original sentence was not manifestly inadequate. Anderson's mother has vowed to continue advocating for change in the treatment of domestic violence cases.

The sentencing judge found the murder to be above the mid-range of objective seriousness but took into account Thompson's mental health issues and childhood disadvantage saying they diminished his moral culpability. Chief Justice Andrew Bell said he would have been inclined to impose a slightly higher sentence but found the sentence imposed was not manifestly inadequate. From Thompson's lawyers... This case deserves nothing but compassion. The feelings experienced by the victim's mum, family and friends is only unimaginable. Justice Bell noted that no sentence less than life imprisonment could even begin to accommodate the family's undoubted grief and anger but said it was comparable to other sentences and not unjust.
