Over the past three decades, astronomers have identified more than 6,000 exoplanets, each with distinct characteristics. Some, like TOI-561b and WASP-43b, exhibit extreme temperatures and weather, while others such as K218b and TRAPPIST-1e are considered potential candidates in the search for life due to their Earth-like qualities.

The discovery of these diverse worlds has expanded our understanding of planetary systems. With upcoming missions like NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, scientists anticipate finding thousands more exoplanets in the near future.

Counting down the top exoplanets ever discovered

32 years ago, the first exoplanet was discovered, and today we know of 6,000. Exoplanets are worlds orbiting other stars, and most are nothing like Earth. TOI-561b is a rocky planet where a year lasts just 10 and a half hours, and it's so close to its star, temperatures hit 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit. That's hot enough to melt rocks into lava oceans. Then there's PSR J23222650b, a planet orbiting a pulsar, the dead remains of an exploded star. And extreme gravity stretches it into a lemon-like shape. It's one of the lightest planets ever discovered. WASP-43b has some of the wildest weather in the universe. It's tidally locked with permanent day and night, and dayside temperatures near 3,000 degrees, driving hurricane-force winds across the planet. Then K218b is one of the most intriguing finds yet. It's a super-Earth, or mini-Neptune, in the habitable zone, with water vapor and carbon-based molecules detected in its atmosphere, making it a major target for the search for life. Finally, TRAPPIST-1e may be the most Earth-like. It's rocky, Earth-sized, and orbits a nearby red dwarf star where liquid water could exist. And we're just getting started. NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope could uncover thousands more alien worlds very soon.
