Victoria Police have notified the counter-terrorism squad after a man was heard shouting 'allahu akbar' when being arrested for a stabbing outside a Melbourne shopping centre. His victim is currently in hospital with minor injuries.

A man was stabbed in the chest and neck during a random attack outside the Moonee Ponds shopping centre in Melbourne's north-west. The victim, with assistance from passers-by and security staff, managed to restrain the attacker until police arrived. 

Authorities have called in the counter-terrorism command after the attacker was heard yelling a religious phrase while being held down. Police have not yet interviewed the suspect, who remains under guard and is undergoing a medical assessment. The victim's injuries are reported to be minor.

Counter-terror squad called for Melbourne stabbing

In developing news tonight, the counter-terror squad has been called in after a man was stabbed in a random attack outside a Melbourne shopping centre late this afternoon. Samara Gardner joins me now. Samara, the victim managed to restrain his attacker. Ursula, yes, this unfolded just before 5pm outside of the Moonee Ponds shopping centre in Melbourne's North West. Police say this is a random attack. Two men had got into a verbal argument before one was stabbed in the chest and neck. After this happened, the victim managed to wrestle his attacker to the ground and with the help of passers-by and security from the shopping centre, he was restrained before police arrived. In a video taken from a nearby building, you can hear the man yelling Allah Akbar as he is held down. Well, this phrase was used after he was in custody. We don't believe that the phrase was used during the offending. So yeah, that's all we know at this stage. Police have notified the counter-terrorism command. The man remains under police guard, but police haven't yet been able to speak to or interview him. On a medical assessment, as for the man who was stabbed, he remains in hospital. His injuries are said to be minor.
