The issue has also sparked debate internationally, with concerns raised in the United States about the dangers of such decorations to animals. Authorities encourage residents to celebrate Halloween safely and consider the impact of decorations on local wildlife.

Straddling the fence between fun police and wildlife warriors, Inner West and Willoughby councils brewing controversy by asking residents to skip synthetic spider webs. The polyester posing more than just an incy wincy problem for wildlife. What tends to happen is the Halloween decorations will get entangled around wings and limbs of the animals. Some of those species would be flying foxes, possums and birds in particular. Not necessarily on October 31st itself, but when decorations are left up, unlike in America, Halloween here falls during nesting season. Birds often will take this sort of stuff because it's soft and line their nest with it, and so chicks that are in the nest can get entangled. Neither the Inner West nor Willoughby Council Mayors were available to speak to us today, but they are not the only ones raising this topic. Lane Cove Council has also issued a similar warning and it's conjuring concern, both interstate and overseas. The City of Marion in South Australia this year reviewed Halloween decorations and now warns it will remove artificial webs placed on council land, while dangerous decorations are now an annual debate in the United States. Some of those hanging Halloween haunts can harm animals. Those fake spider webs, they can turn into a real scary situation.
