President Donald Trump suggested Wednesday that he could deploy National Guard troops to New Orleans to fight crime. Could Denver, another city with a Democratic mayor, be next?

President Trump has suggested deploying National Guard troops to several U.S. cities to address crime, with New Orleans mentioned as a possible next location. Previous deployments have included Los Angeles, Chicago, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., with a recent court ruling declaring the Los Angeles deployment illegal.

A law professor from the University of Colorado was consulted about the likelihood of Denver being targeted for a similar deployment. The professor noted that if the Guard is sent to Chicago against the governor's wishes, it would set a precedent and place the country in uncharted legal territory. The expert also emphasized that U.S. soldiers are not permitted to enforce civilian law.

Could President Trump send National Guard troops to Denver?

So we're going to be going to maybe Louisiana, and you have New Orleans, which has a crime problem. We'll straighten that out in about two weeks. That was President Trump today suggesting he may deploy National Guard troops to New Orleans next to fight crime. The president already has said he plans to send the Guard to Chicago and Baltimore following the deployment of troops and federal agents to Washington, D.C. In June, Trump sent 4,000 Guard troops to Los Angeles to confront ICE protesters. A judge fact this week ruled that that deployment was illegal. So L.A., Chicago, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, all Democratic-controlled cities. Is Denver next? Well, this afternoon, I called Associate Professor of Law at CU Law School and asked him just that. Should this be something that the people of Denver should keep in mind, or is this just a silly theoretical thing that we shouldn't even give the time of day to? Well, I think we should be concerned. Obviously, it has happened in Los Angeles. It's happened in D.C. I think what we're really going to see in the next week or two is what happens in Chicago. And I think that will really tell us a lot about just how far the president is willing to go. Even when the governor of Illinois, Governor Pritzker, has spoken out quite aggressively against the deployment of the National Guard to Illinois. If they do deploy the Guard to Chicago against the governor's wishes, we really will be uncharted territory. And if they do it in Chicago, they could certainly do it in Denver. Soldiers, by the way, cannot enforce civilian law in the U.S.
